Welcome 45 to

English for Aviation N125

Week 6 Feb 9-13 2014 - N125 Class 45 classes in ILC

Speaking practice for your speaking test next week

In your two ILC periods this week you will work from this exercise <== download here

First fill in the missing words, then practice one of the conversations with your partner

Next, record the conversation with your partner. One of you is the pilot and the other is ATC

How to install AUDACITY and the LAME plugin for mp3

Download the handout <== HERE

If you are not able to record on the Internet, you can record on your computer, save the file, and upload it

You'll need to get Audacity (free) and download it to your laptop computer

  1. Get Audacity first: http://audacity.sourceforge.net/download/
  2. To be able to export your recordings to mp3 GET LAME HERE
    1. Click on the link above
    2. Save the file on your computer or RUN it

Install BOTH programs

  • For both programs click yes, next, next, finish, ok, etc.
  • For the two programs to work together, DO NOT CHANGE the offered installation location of "C:\Program Files\Lame for Audacity"
(or "C:\Program Files (x86)\Lame for Audacity" on a 64-bit version of Windows).

The instructions above are simplified from herehttp://manual.audacityteam.org/o/man/faq_installation_and_plug_ins.html#lame

You should now be able to export MP3s

If it doesn't work automatically, this video shows you how to find and activate the LAME file http://www.screenr.com/ULH8

You do this ONLY the FIRST time (one time only) you create an MP3 file using Audacity

Now you can make mp3 recordings using Audacity, and UPLOAD them to Voki and AudioBoo

TASK 1: Find a partner and record a conversation in AudioBoo

With a partner, record one of the conversations between pilot and ATC

You can record one part of the conversation, pause the recording, and then let your partner record the next line

Create an account here: http://audioboo.fm

Click on RECORD / UPLOAD and decide with method is best for getting your voices on Audioboo

If you have OK bandwidth, you can try recording directly online

Title your conversation class-section kbzac names

(like this ... 45-6 KBZAC mohammed and ahmed

Then write your names, section number, and teacher name in the place for a description

If you can’t record online, record an mp3 in Audacity and UPLOAD it

TASK 2: create a Voki

like this one

Here's how

Get an account at http://voki.com and create a VOKI

Make your Voki look like a pilot.

Record yourself talking to ATC, or upload an mp3 file, and publish your Voki

Write your name, ID and section and paste the URL of your VOKI in this space

These Vokis were created in classes on Feb 10, 2014
