Class 1 The Amelia Earhart enigma

An 'enigma' is a mystery, something very difficult to understand

Instructions:

  1. Watch the video at the link above
  2. Answer the 13 Quiz questions and show the results to your teacher
    This counts as 50% of your mark for today 
  3. Either fill out the worksheet or send an email to your teacher vstevens@hct.ac.ae
  4. On the worksheet, or in the email, ANSWER these questions, in your own words
    1. Who was Amelia Earhart?
    2. What is the enigma about her disappearance?
    3. What do YOU think happened to her?
  5. Hand the paper in to the teacher, or send the email, by the end the class (this is the other 50% of your mark today)
    This work is evidence of your progress in class today

    If the video is too slow to load then do this: Type "amelia earhart" into a Google search box and then follow the search suggests to "amelia earhart found" or "amelia earhart plane found"  
    1. Copy URLs of websites you research to help you understand the enigma
    2. Paste the URLs into your Google Doc with notes about what you found there 
    3. Revise your last paragraph based on the research you conduct
  2. If you aren't using Google Docs then you can create a Word document and email that to your teacher

 

Overview of the entire task 

  1. First, you watch the video about Amelia Earhart, and answer the IELTS questions if the plugin is available on your browser 
  2. Next start an essay on The Enigma of Amelia Earhart by answering 3 questions (in 3 paragraphs) on the paper given you in class
  3. If you've got a Google Account, sign in, visit http://docs.google.com, and ...
    1. Create a new DOCUMENT
    2. Change the title from Untitled Document to Your Name, section number, Enigma
    3. Share the document with vancestev@gmail.com
    4. Expand your three paragraphs in that Google Doc

 

If you have not got a Google account yet then

you will have to do this work in Word or on paper and hand that in to your teacher

IELTS formal letter writing step by step

  1. Download this handout ===> about IELTS Formal Letter Practice
    1. Read the first two paragraphs of the  Sample Solution
      1. These are the paragraphs where you
        1. Introduce yourself
        2. Explain the problem
        3. The paragraph where you ask for ACTION on your problem is blank
    2. Now fill in the blanks on the side with the empty boxes
      1. Use the Sample Solution to get ideas for what to say 
      2. Many blanks could have many possible answers
      3. In the classroom, teachers work with students to help them reconstruct the entire letter up on the whiteboard, rather than give out the second page of the handout before this stage
    3. Request for ACTION
      1. Now study the rest of the handout explaining typical IELTS formal letter questions, with sample solutions
      2. Study the last paragraph in the sample, the request for ACTION 
        (compare it with what you you have created on the whiteboard)
      3. Turn back to the Sample Solution and complete the missing 3rd paragraph
    4.  Now write a sample letter from one of the following
      1. one of the prompts in the handout
      2. one of the online resources given from http://www.dcielts.com/writing-2/sample-questions/
      3. a prompt your teacher gives you
