Activating and using your HCT account

Each student has been issued a letter from HCT giving them their HCT ID and password

Each student has signed a letter acknowledging receipt of that information and the importance of maintaining password security

With your HCT account you can do three important things:

use HCT email, access the KBZAC LAN, and log on to the HCT Portal

Use your HCT ID and password to enter your Outlook Webmail

• YOU CAN change your password to something you can remember.
• DO NOT LOSE or forget your password.  It will be difficult to get it re-set.

Send an email from your HCT account at http://email.hct.ac.ae  

to vstevens@hct.ac.ae. Please write the following in your mail:

• Subject: Listening assignment for Sept 3, 2013
• Body: IDENTIFY yourself and request that I send you the link to the audio file (as in example, below)

Why?

• HCT mail is essential for communications with your teacher 
  (Google is for sharing documents; HCT mail is for email communications)
• When you are able to access your mail, send an email from your HCT account to your teacher, so we will know who has retained the letters given to them (and which you signed for) with password information 

Accessing the HCT LAN

Important: The KBZAC LAN is accessible only at the college

You cannot reach the LAN over the Internet

Therefore you can only use the LAN while at KBZAC

You should be able to SUBMIT assignments to your teachers at this LAN address

Please follow your teachers instructions about naming files put there (otherwise we'll have a mess)

You can find your reading and listening materials on the LAN

Copy and paste this into any Windows Explorer window (i.e. a My Computer; not Internet Explorer)

To get on the LAN you need to know your HCT ID and password.

When challenged for it you need to give your ID as a member of the hctad domain, as shown here:

You can access the HCT Portal by typing this url into a BROWSER - http://portal.hct.ac.ae

How to recover your password if you forget it

If you have lost the letter giving you your HCT ID and password, your password can be recovered

You will need to have your mobile phone with you (so you will need to do this off-base)

Here is the procedure

A message will be sent to your mobile phone with further instructions

The code in that message is valid for just 3 hours, so plan to complete the process quickly once you begin it 

You need this essential FREE software

Or install something similar on your computers

• Either purchase a copy of Microsoft Office or install one of these free open source alternatives
• Open Office - http://www.openoffice.org/
• LibraOffice - http://www.libreoffice.org/download
• Why? So you can create documents, presentations, and spreadsheets 
• Either activate Macafee or purchase something similar, or download for free: Avast Antivirus - http://www.avast.com/
• Why? So you you can reliably protect your computer
• Audacity - http://audacity.sourceforge.net/
• Why? So you can record your voice and practice speakin 
• Irfanview photo editor and media management - http://www.irfanview.com/
• Why? So you can manage and edit photos and media on your computer
• Adobe Reader - download it here: http://www.adobe.com/products/reader.html 
• Why? To be able to read PDF files when necessary

These web services will help you work interactively with your teacher

Create an account at Google (if you don't have one already).  When done, send an email from your Gmail account to vstevens@hct.ac.ae.

Please write the following in your mail:

• Subject: From (and write your name)
• Body: Please indicate which items of software you have managed to download and if you are having any problems with your computer

Why?

• So you can share documents with your teacher and get effective feedback
• So you can create a blog at http://blogger.com and make notes on your learning 

Create an account at Dropbox, http://dropbox.com

• Why?
• So you can share large files with your teachers and other students
• So you can keep your personal files in the cloud and access them from any computer
• We might be able to use Google Drive for this, but an online dropbox is useful to have for life
