Why?

Some section 1 students are complaining that the work with Oxford English for Aviation is not interesting  for them.  These students feel that they do not need the aviation materials as much as students in other sections.  They think that there should be a separate set of work for section 1 students different from that required for other students. ONE of these students has said that if he could have a project to do he would not only engage with the starter material but then WRITE an essay about the project.

Your teachers agrees with this. This was difficult to arrange before each student had a laptop, but now that each of  you has the means to work independently, your teacher is prepared to offer the opportunity for any student in section 1 to embark on a separate evaluation track, with a mark for those students to replace the mark currently given for classwork.

What if you want to do this?

Any student wishing to do this should first submit a proposal.  The proposal should include

  1. A title for your project
  2. An overview of the project
  3. How you plan to research it
    1. What you plan to read
    2. What you plan to watch on YouTube
    3. What Google search terms you might use
    4. Any other resources you think will be helpful in learning more about your project
  4. Deliverables
    1. What do you plan to write for the project?
      1. How long will it be? (pages, words)
    2. Will you create anything else?
      1. Audio files?
      2. Video compilations?
      3. Prezi or PowerPoint?
    3. How will you document your research?
  5. Time commitment
    1. Indicate how long (in hours, or how many class periods) you plan to spend on research
    2. How long (hours, class periods) to you need to prepare your first draft
    3. Be sure to leave plenty of time for revision based on teacher feedback
  6. A plan of action for the project giving dates that
    1. Initial research will be completed
    2. A first draft of the project will be submitted
    3. Final draft of the project will be due

How will this be marked?

  • Substantial work on your product between now and the end of term could replace your existing class mark with a much higher mark
  • Saying you will work on a project but then wasting time in class and in the end producing nothing much will not affect your mark all that much

If interested, prepare a proposal, and we will consider (for what your class mark will be)

  • If what you propose to do
    • is realistic?
    • will be a substantial learning experience for you
    • will be a suitable replacement for work the other students are expected to complete during class
    • is something you are willing to focus on for at least half of all remaining class periods
  • When do you get started?
    • If you start on this early in Week 37, it can be a major part of your final mark
    • If you start on this in Week 39, it is unlikely you will have time to make this a significant part of your final mark
  • At the end
    • if you did what you promised
    • how well you did it
    • whether or not you were observed during class time working on your project

How can you get started?

Ideally, if you have or will create, a Google account, work like this is best done in Google Docs

Alternatively, you can email your proposal to vstevens@hct.ac.ae

You can put the proposal in the body of an email, or you can send it as an attached file

Here are some suggestions for topics

These are just suggestions. You can propose any topic

Aviation Incident Investigation

Identify an aviation incident requiring investigation, describe what happened (what is known, what is not known, about the incident).  What investigations have been made.  What are your recommendations in this incident.  Use several resources in making your report.

Engaging 21st Century Learners

Marc Prensky tries to explain how many young students these days are not engaged by their teachers; e.g.http://www.edutopia.org/ikid-digital-learner-technology-2008.  Find more work by Marc Prensky, or other authors, that help explain the problem.  Make recommendations about how you think teachers could improve teaching to better engage students at KBZAC.

Gamification in Learning

How can games be used in learning English and aviation subjects?  Can you make a case for "gamification" at KBZAC? If you are interested in this topic, ask your teacher to discuss more resources with you.

These conditions may result in the teacher not allowing much (or any) credit for your work

  • Obviously not working on your project during class time
  • Not getting started in time to propose and carry out a plan of action; not working on the plan once started
  • Plagiarism, or copying from the work of others
    • If you wish to use someone else's words, you must put these words in quote marks and CITE the work; that is state where you got the work in such a way that the reader can find it
    • Such citations should be brief and never comprise most of the work
  • Not using sufficient resources in your research
    • You need at least 5 resources
    • All your resources must contribute to your project
    • Resources used must be listed at the end of your deliverable document
    • Resources listed must be cited (quoted or referred to) in that document
