        Listening Preparation

These listening practices were made by teachers to prepare students for the kinds of questions they will find on the Final Exam on Tuesday. Section 1 heard these in class on Wed Oct 2.

Listen to the mp3 for listening practice 1 and identify ALL THE planes in this diagram

See the script for listening practices 1 and 2

This exercise was meant to help you listen to conversations between pilots and ATC and "paraphrase" or report what they hear.  You complete the report by putting the number of the correct word in the blank.

Here's more Units 3-4 vocabulary review from Peter Jones that came in after our last review class before the exam, Oct 6

        Vocabulary Preparation

Here are two vocabulary review exercises for units 3 and 4

Section 1 was given one of these in class 4th period Thu Oct 3, the other on Sunday Oct 6

        Week 39 - Sept 29-Oct 1, 2013

How to PREPARE for your speaking test

        • You can study the materials which your teacher went over in class last week (below)
        • You can study Units 3 and 4 vocabulary and names of vehicles and other objects you find around airports
The speaking test is partly about using Unit 3 and 4 vocabulary, so prepare to use words from these units
        •  Follow this link to listen to speaking samples of different levels based on the ICAO scale:
          http://air.gtelp.co.kr/sample/samples.html

Mid term progress tests speaking and listening based on ICAO

You can prepare for the test by recording yourself in two simple assignments <=== HERE

        Speaking Test Guidelines

The speaking test will be conducted during week 39. It is adapted from the original version to be more suitable to the current course. For example, the pictures will be of aircraft/airport situations specifically chosen to encourage use of unit 3 and 4 vocabulary. For more on this kind of testing in Aviation English, please see the following links:

This slide show shows accident pictures and prompts you for how you might describe each one:

        http://www.slideshare.net/petterzug/aviation-topics-picture-description

Another suggestion: View these videos of Airside Vehicles on YouTube and describe some of the vehicles and what they are doing:
        http://kbzac.pbworks.com/w/page/59131087/FrontPage#AirsidevehiclesonYouTube

Our test most closely corresponds to the TEA test parts 1 (short interview) and 3 (picture description)

The links above are for guidelines only. For example, timings will not apply

        • our speaking tests will be kept to a maximum of 5 minutes total.

All teachers must submit PDA reports on each student this week

        • PDA report counts as 10% of your final mark
        • Your calculated classwork score is 20% of PDA mark - How is it calculated?
          • PDA scores are made from 10 ratings marked 1 to 5 for POOR up to EXCELLENT
          • Half your classwork score is used as 2 of those ten ratings (the % of that mark of 5 possible points)
          • Therefore, that score becomes 10 out of 50 marks on your PDA form, or 2% of your final mark

        Week 38

Get the handout for your work this week <=== HERE

How to prepare for midterm ICAO / TEA speaking test

If you wish to prepare for this test, which counts as 20% of your final mark, then you will have to work on preparation during the two class periods available this week. This is not something your teacher can "teach" you - YOU need to practice.

How can your teacher provide feedback to 20 students in the two hours of class this week?

If you record your practice, your teacher can provide feedback.

You can making a recording of a description of a picture, or recording your answer to one of the interview questions

        • To make a recording you will need to download Audacity <== See Essential Download list
Audacity can save files as mp3 (small file sizes)
        • You can also use Sound Recorder in Program Files > Accessories
Windows Sound Recorder saves files as WAV (larger file sizes)

On Thu Sept 19 you were shown these Speaking Test Guidelines in class

You were told the speaking test will be conducted during week 39.  The test will take no more than 5 minutes.

You were told you would see pictures of aircraft/airport situations specifically chosen to encourage use of unit 3 and 4 vocabulary.

To explain more about this kind of test, you were shown these links last Thursday in class

(and again on Tue Sept 24 and Thu Sept 26)

You were told that you will be tested on TEA test parts 1 (short interview) and 3 (picture description)

In-class assignments for 1 period Sunday, September 8

Download the HANDOUT for Sunday Sept 8 <== HERE

Your assignment today is Ex 20 on p.28 in the OEA workbook.  This is the last assignment for unit 3. There are two parts to the assignment.  You can do the assignments on paper if you wish (and hand them in to the teacher) or you can do them using your laptops, in the way suggested here:

Your teacher will provide a handout, but you can also use your own copy of the PDF of the book

The handout is on two sides of the paper

        • Ex 20 on Page 28 in OEA (two assignments)
        • For your reference, transcripts of mp3 files for Unit 3, pages 86 and 87 in the OEA textbook

        Dialogs between Pilot and Controller

Work with a partner.  Create a dialog between a pilot and controller that meets the specifications given in OEA Ex 20. Then either

        • Write the dialog out on paper, put your names on it, and hand it in to the teacher
        • Use your Google account to create a Google Doc entitled OEA Ex20 and your two names. Share it with your partner and with vancestev@gmail.com
        • Use a shared online space you can create at  http://titanpad.com/.  You and your partner work on the same URL.  Send the URL of the completed work from your HCT email to vstevens@hct.ac.ae (please do not send email to my Gmail account, it will get lost)
        • Record your dialog in Audacity
          • send it as an attachment to vstevens@hct.ac.ae or if it is too big for that
          • upload it to Google Drive and share it with vancestev@gmail.com
          • Place it in Student Submissions on the LAN at the address \\10.27.7.26\Program_Area\Student_Submission

Read the article and answer the questions

Read the article entitled "Shortened runway exposes serious safety concerns".  Answer the questions at the end in one of these ways:

        • The usual way: Write you name on the paper, answer the questions on the page, and hand the paper in to the teacher
        • The more interesting way that utilizes your laptops:
          • Open OEA to p. 28 in your Adobe Reader with text editing or typewriter activated
          • Answer the questions by typing on the page where the questions are
          • Make a screenshot of the page using the Snipping Tool in Accessories and save it to your computer
          • Send the file as an attachment to vstevens@hct.ac.ae
        • Other options for submitting your work
          • Write your answers in an email and send them to vstevens@hct.ac.ae, subject OEA Ex.20

          • Write your answers in a Word or Open Office document and send it attached to vstevens@hct.ac.ae, subject OEA Ex.20

On Monday we will begin work on Unit 4 in OEA

        This work includes

        • Work in the OEA book itself, Unit 4
        • Vocabulary for Unit 4 which you can complete online
        • Practice listening and completing narrative descriptions (or charts or diagrams) in the way that will be tested in the auditorium

Your next test will be in Week 37 on Thu Sept 19

Response to two kinds of feedback from students

The first kind is that I did not give out in class all pages from the textbook, Oxford English for Aviation

I HAD given all pages from OEA out in class.

        • Each class assignment was recorded in this wiki
        • It is also recorded in my grade book where many students did the work in class and submitted it (but the student providing that feedback had not done it)

Therefore, you can see that it is important that

        • We DO the work from the textbook
        • That we keep records of assignments made and who has completed those assignments

The second kind of feedback is that the work in the class is not interesting (but that was before laptops)

        • The students are expecting that the teacher should provide interesting materials to the class.
        • The teacher feels that interesting material would follow from student cooperation and focus on learning in the class.

Here's how you can be a perfect language learner:

        http://www.stgeorges.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/Free-English-lessons-in-London_Perfect-Language-Learner.jpg

Now that you have laptops there are a lot of things you can do to make your work in class more interesting

IMPORTANT, you must protect your laptop by activating virus protection, have you done that?

        • Think ahead, McAfee will work for free only for a month.  After that you need to pay to update your anti-virus database
        • Your teacher uses Avast! free antivirus protection

You can download the OEA PDF file with typewriter function

        • From the KBZ LAN (copy this address into a My Computer window) \\10.27.7.26\Program_Area\Student_Collection\Oxford English for Aviation
        • You will need a PDF Reader to read the file and activate the typewriter (get it from http://www.adobe.com/products/reader.html

With these tools, a writable PDF file of the book, and Adobe PDF Reader you can do assignments in the book in an interesting way

        Week 35 - Sept 1-5, 2013

New Laptops bring new rules and announcements

Now that you have laptops, you have responsibility for getting your work done at your convenience.

The teacher will use class time to help students with their work and facilitate its completion and submission.  Students will receive credit for work done (and no credit for now work done).

Work will be assigned at this portal and you are responsible for checking here and completing assignments made here.  When you have done your work you may use class time as you wish (as long as you don't disturb the work of others).

        One important announcement:

The vocabulary test for Unit 3 parts 1 and 2 will be Thursday first two periods in the Auditorium, same seating as before

Important: When you EMAIL me at vstevens@hct.ac.ae you MUST use a SUBJECT

And make sure you identify your name, ID, and section
