- Assessment in Section 2:
Final speaking evaluations, 10% of final mark (one of 3 components to Final exam)
Tuesday September 23 - Per 5 Section 4 Speaking preparation - Paragraph writing and AudioBoo
Today we will continue with our preparation for your speaking tests next week
From yesterday, it appears that the best practice is ACTIVE writing or speaking. The following techniques will work best:
Use AudioBoo to practice your speaking
Find a partner and record your conversation about one of the photos <== BEST PRACTICE
- Pilot 1 speaks about the photo for a couple of minutes
- Pilot 2 asks follow up questions
- Pilot 1 answers questions and posts mp3 to Audioboo
- Pilot 2 becomes pilot 1 and carries out steps 1-3,
- both pilots post an mp3 to each one's individual Audioboo profile
If you do this, ask your teacher to listen to it in your profile and give you feedback
Write out your description of a picture
- Choose a picture or a pair of pictures from the many available
- Write a paragraph on a separate sheet of paper
- Show it to your teacher for feedback and correction
Sample picture pair 1 (engine fires)
Sample picture pair 2 (difficult landings)
Sample picture pair 3 (Don't try this at home)
Monday September 22 - Per 7 Section 4 Speaking preparation
Vance's classes today and tomorrow can be used for speaking test preparation.
There are many things you can do
- You can study the two handouts you are given today in class
You can find these handouts here
http://efan101.pbworks.com/w/page/85120366/45-EFA-N101#Extensionmaterialsforspeakingpractice
- You can write answers to the questions on p.2
on the TEA Complete the cloze practice you were given yesterday
- Your teacher can show you some sample pictures
You can write some statements about any of the pictures (on a separate sheet of paper) or use page 2 of the TEA Complete the cloze practice
There is just one thing you should NOT do
nothing

- Fluency (this takes practice, in order to develop fluid speaking skills)
- Comprehension (we can help you anticipate the format of the exam)
- Interactions (you can practice this in pairs with colleagues)
In class today we can look at photos and try to model what we can say about those photos
You should review
You can also find a partner and record your conversation about one of the photos
- Pilot 1 speaks about the photo for a couple of minutes
- Pilot 2 asks follow up questions
- Pilot 1 answers questions and posts mp3 to Audioboo
- Pilot 2 becomes pilot 1 and carries out steps 1-3, so that both pilots post an mp3 to each one's individual Audioboo profile

- If you haven't completed the worksheet yet you will have a chance to complete it for a score of 85%
We took grades at the beginning of the period and started working on the plan as follows.
In practice, only half the students had Audacity, so we could only do step 1 below
All prepared recordings, but files came in as mp3 and wma
Later we'll need to get all students equipped with Audacity so they can produce mp3
We were not able to work in AudioBoo.
You'll need to have a completed worksheet to continue with the work for today

If you don't have / can't install Audacity, you can use Windows Sound Recorder
It's not as powerful or easy to work with as Audacity, but it will work
As a next step (tomorrow) Google ATIS on YouTube
Air Traffic Controllers extract the following information from real ATIS broadcasts:
http://www.speechtech.com/?gclid=CK3u5dOlisACFSEewwodZqcAHA
Use these recordings and use Audacity to extract ATIS information http://www.flykvny.com/aero/audio-recording/logs/2014/08/10/

Sunday Aug 10 Period 1 Memrise
In the half a period we had once students arrived in their new classrooms and settled in, they found the Memrise course http://www.memrise.com/course/360171/n100/
The task was to follow VanceS and get some points on the scoreboard
Week 31 Aug 3 - Aug 7, 2014
Thursday Aug 7 Period 4 Unit 5 Vocab fill-in-blank exercise
Vocabulary preparation for exam at end of Week 34
Download the vocabulary list
Wednesday Aug 6 Periods 3 and 5 Departure information on Padlet and Word attachment
Tuesday Aug 5 Periods 3 and 4 work with CFT, Adobe, HTC email
Plan for today:
- Explore KBZAC "magic web site" and see what is there
- Work for THIS class (this page) - how to find it in the sidebar
- assessment strategy and timing of assessments
- where to find help for tools needed for this course, other pilot resources
- Get CFT5 materials onto your computer for review in the barracks
- By the end of Period 4 by
- Download the CFT5 p.88 fill in the blank pdf
Item 4 here: http://kbzac.pbworks.com/w/page/69592949/N101#Unit5Vocabulary
- Open it in ADOBE from your computer, see instructions here:
http://kbzac.pbworks.com/w/page/59131087/FrontPage#HowtoopenPDFfilesinAdobe
- Activate the typewriter feature to fill in the blanks and save the completed file on their computer. NOTE: Students must write their NAME and ID on the file and store it on the computer.
The file should be named: Name-ID-CFT5p88
(Most students had got this far by the end of period 3)
- Email the file to the teacher at vstevens@hct.ac.ae
If you can't email the file, you can do so when they set up an active email.
Most students had managed this by the end of Period 4
Monday Aug 4 Periods 3 and 4 download CFT, HCT email, Socrative
- We stressed the importance of having a working and fully charged computer available at the beginning of each class, since the English Dept is not able to provide paper copies of all the worksheets needed this semester. Most students had one or had a plan to comply with this requirement.
- Students were asked to download Unit 5 of Cleared for Takeoff (CFT5)
http://kbzac.pbworks.com/w/file/fetch/83624797/CfT%20Unit%205%20typewriter.pdf
Most of the students were able to open the file in a reader
Next step will be to save the file on the computer and open it in Adobe
- We tried to get HCT email working for each student
Only one student was able to send an email; there was confusion over the exact address of the HCT mail server (the one provided them with IDs and passwords was not correct). When the used the correct one most reached the MS/Outlook window where Microsoft credentials must be entered.
Next step will be to have students create Google accounts so they will have email and access to Google tools
- The students visited Socrative.com and did the
prepositions exercise for CFT5 Inside the plane pp.88-89
Most students were able to complete the exercise and appeared to enjoy it
Sunday Aug 3 Period 1 welcome back to KBZAC
Technology was not connected so we used the YouTube app on the iPad to find song lyrics that the students would like to study at a later date. There were recorded here:
